Nowadays 90% of all our interactions whether it be banking, purchasing online or social connections are made either on computers or mobile devices. More and more we are being victim of cyber attacks, scams, viruses, ransomwares and hacks from all over the world.
Being online 24 x7 does bring about many security issues if we are not careful about how we protect ourselves.
- Always keep your devices secure
Having strong passwords on your all your devices whether mobile or desktop will help. Keep one password for all your personal accounts and use a different one for accounts you may have subscribed online.
Make your passwords a minimum of 8 Characters Include Capitals, Numbers and Special Characters this will make it harder for someone to hack your password. for Example, instead of my password being ‘england’ which would take a hacker just under 15 mins to find, I could use ‘3ngl@nD*’ this will take years to be decrypted.
- Always keep your operating system up to date
Every device has an operating system – this being Android, Macbook or Windows. Install every update as manufacturers are always finding bugs or insecurities within their software and by applying those patches or updates will reduce your device in becoming vulnerable.
- Install Antivirus and Security software
Install an antivirus and security software and always keep it up to date. If you are not sure if you have one, contact your IT solutions provider and get them to install one. This will keep nasties away from your devices, protect them from viruses, malware, adware and spyware. Some also provide Web Security to keep your online identity safe.
- Never give your password or account information to anyone
Keep your passwords and accounts safe. Never give any info specially if your receive emails asking for information or a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft or different companies saying that your computer is having issues and they can help with your account. If you are unsure, better to hang up from them and call your bank or the service the person said they were representing to make sure they are who they say they are from.
- Do not open emails if you do not know who it comes from
A lot of fraudulent people will bombard you with emails and offers too good to resist. If you are unsure of the sender open the email and make sure that the sender email address is legitimate. For example, if receiving emails from AGL about your gas account then make sure the senders email is legitimate by opening the email and double checking the senders email it should show email@example.com. if the domain name does not match the company that is asking the details then you can bet your bottom dollar that it’s a fake. In any case, again if unsure, set the email as spam and contact the service provider for clarification.
